The first night in a new travel trailer usually goes fine until about 2 a.m. The air conditioner kicks on directly above the bed. Somebody shuffles off to the bathroom and discovers the door stops two-thirds open against the mattress, while a phone on the nightstand sits at 4% because the only outlet within reach is hiding behind a dinette cushion.
Nothing is broken. That's the frustrating part.
By the third morning, those small things have quietly become the trip. We've watched plenty of first-time buyers walk our lots, and most of them shop the photogenic stuff first, like the slide-out and the size of the TV. And that’s understandable. The trailers people end up loving, though, are the ones where the drawers stay shut on I-10 and nobody has to get out of bed to charge a phone.
So this post looks at the Westbrook Luxury, the higher trim of Forest River's Westbrook travel trailer, from the inside. Less brochure and more about what it's like to sleep, cook and wait out a thunderstorm in one, and what happens to all that comfort once the campsite runs out of hookups.
What "Luxury" Means on a Travel Trailer
Start by lowering the word a notch. A Westbrook Luxury is a bumper-pull travel trailer with a nicer trim package, and new ones on our lots are currently listed in the low-to-mid $30,000s. That's real money. It's also nowhere near motorhome money.
🗣️Real talk: You won't find a residential refrigerator, an air conditioner in every room or solid-surface countertops here. Standard equipment is one 15,000 BTU air conditioner, a 10.6-cubic-foot 12V fridge and thermofoil pressed counters, with a second bedroom A/C optional on some models. All of it works fine, but none of it would make a hotel brochure.
What the trim actually buys is fewer daily irritations, and these are the ones you'll feel:
- Ducted 15,000 BTU A/C. Cold air moves through ceiling vents rather than pouring out of one box mid-trailer. During a southern July in a 30-plus-foot trailer, that's how cool air reaches the bedroom at all.
- On-demand tankless water heater. Water heats as it flows, so the second shower doesn't wait on a tank. A remote in the bathroom switches it on.
- Power stabilizer jacks, power tongue jack, backup camera and tire pressure monitoring. Setup is where new owners sweat. A button beats kneeling in gravel with a drill while the neighbors critique your technique.
- Nightstands with 110V and USB-C ports. The 2 a.m. phone problem? Handled.
- Ball-bearing drawer glides and magnetic latches. Open a cabinet after 300 miles and find everything where you left it. Worth more than it sounds.
- Enclosed, heated underbelly. It barely matters in south. But on a November weekend in the North Carolina mountains, it helps keep the plumbing from freezing.
- Outdoor mini fridge. Drinks stay outside, and the screen door gets a break. Of everything on this list, it's the one we'd miss first.
Then there's the stuff that photographs well. The electric fireplace is lovely on a cool October evening and adds genuine heat on shore power, though in August it's a mantel. The automatic glass rinser in the sink is fun to demonstrate exactly once. A Smart TV, a carry-out Bluetooth speaker, a bottle opener by the door and a D-ring for the dog's leash round it out, and all of them are pleasant without being reasons to buy.
When you hold a Westbrook Luxury up against a cheaper trailer, compare the first list. That's where the extra money went.
A Day in One
The bed comes first, since that's where trailers win or lose people.
Every Westbrook Luxury floorplan uses a camp king, which is 72 by 80 inches. A residential king is four inches wider, so the sheets from your linen closet will bunch at the corners all week; buy camp king sheets before the first trip. Underneath sit a hideaway ottoman and portable storage bins, and the bedroom adds two oversized shirt closets and enclosed overhead cabinets. Overkill for a weekend? Maybe. On day nine of a ten-day trip, it's why the suitcases aren't parked on the dinette.
Each side of the bed gets its own reading light and powered nightstand, so one person can read while the other sleeps.
Morning is coffee, and the kettle belongs on the high-output front burner of the three-burner stovetop. When breakfast is done, a flush-mount glass cover folds down over the burners and turns them into counter space. We've stepped into a lot of travel trailers over the years, and counter space runs short in every single one, so that cover earns its keep more than anything else in the kitchen.
🗣️Real talk: There's no conventional oven. The space below the stovetop holds an air fryer microwave instead, which handles bacon, frozen biscuits and leftovers without complaint. A sheet pan of cinnamon rolls is another matter.
Around it you get an extra-large single sink that actually fits a skillet, a pull-down sprayer faucet, a full-extension pots-and-pans drawer, a hidden pantry and a 10-blade exhaust fan that pulls the bacon smell out before it moves into the sofa. Serious cooks should look hard at the rear-kitchen 245RKLC, which gives the kitchen the most room.
Most states have their own schedule weather schedules, but no matter where you are thunderstorms are inevitable. Everyone piles inside. This is the moment the floorplan matters more than any feature on the sticker: the Westbrook 245RKLC and 285BHLC each have one slide-out, the 305DBLC has two, and three hours of rain with four people in 32 feet and one slide is a noticeably different afternoon than the same crowd in 37 feet with two. The super-jackknife sofa helps. So do the optional theater seating and the USB-C ports at the bunks. None of them adds a square foot.
Once the storm passes, the 19-foot LED-lit power awning goes back out, the mini fridge reopens for business, and the exterior spray port by the entry rinses beach sand off feet before it gets tracked in. Wet shoes go in the cubby inside the door, next to the dog's dish.
Nights come down to climate. Ducted A/C covers summer, and an auto-ignition furnace with a wall thermostat takes the chill off a cold morning. Camping in the Southeast between June and September? Ask about that optional 15,000 BTU bedroom unit. A single air conditioner in a 37-foot trailer on a 95-degree afternoon is working awfully hard.
When the Hookups Run Out
Pull into a site with no power pedestal, and some things keep humming along while others go dark.
Propane carries the heat and the cooking. With two 20-pound tanks on board, coffee and hot showers survive. The catch is electrical: the furnace and tankless water heater still lean on the 12-volt battery for ignition and controls, and the furnace blower ranks among the hungriest 12-volt loads on board. A cold night with the heat cycling drinks from the same battery as the fridge.
Anything on 110V household current is off the table without shore power, because an inverter isn't standard on a Westbrook. That means no air conditioner, no air fryer microwave and no fireplace.
The 12V refrigerator is the in-between case. It keeps running after you unplug since it draws straight from the battery, which also makes it the steadiest drain on any no-hookup trip. Westbrooks don't leave the factory with a house battery, and at Campers Inn the trailer typically goes home with a standard 12-volt battery of around 100 amp-hours. Ask whether yours is lithium or lead-acid. Lead-acid shouldn't be run much past half its capacity, while lithium lets you use most of it, and that gap decides how long the milk stays cold.
Up top, a 200-watt solar panel and 40-amp charge controller slow the drain on sunny days and keep the battery topped off between trips. Helpful, certainly. An off-grid system, no.
🗣️Real talk: Water usually ends a dry-camping trip before power does. Every Westbrook Luxury carries a 42-gallon fresh tank, whether it's the 29-foot 245RKLC or the 37-foot 305DBLC, so a couple and a bunkhouse full of kids start with the identical supply. Endless hot water from the tankless heater makes that easy to forget.
Gray capacity is 68 gallons on the Westbrook 285BHLC and 245RKLC, and 102 on the 305DBLC. Black holds 34 gallons on all three. With a big family aboard, keep an eye on that one through the systems monitor panel.
Topping off the fresh tank before you leave home guarantees water on arrival. It also adds roughly 350 pounds, since water weighs about 8.3 pounds a gallon, and every one of those pounds rides behind the truck.
Bottom line: a night or two off hookups is comfortable, and a long weekend works with some discipline. A July week of boondocking does not.
What Comfort Weighs
Every convenience in the last three sections has to be towed down the highway, and here's what Forest River publishes for the three floorplans:
- 245RKLC: 29'0" long, 6,083 lb empty, 745 lb hitch weight, 7,745 lb GVWR
- 285BHLC: 32'7" long, 6,908 lb empty, 840 lb hitch weight, 8,908 lb GVWR
- 305DBLC: 37'9" long, 8,008 lb empty, 1,125 lb hitch weight, 9,925 lb GVWR
🗣️Real talk: Empty weight (Forest River calls it UVW) is the number that ends up in brochures, and it matters least. Nobody tows an empty trailer. Load water, propane, groceries, chairs and a cooler, and you're climbing toward the GVWR, which is the most the trailer is rated to weigh. Size the tow vehicle to that number, with margin, because a truck maxed out on I-75 in July makes for a long drive.
Hitch weight trips up first-timers more often. The published figure is also an empty number, and once loaded, the tongue typically carries 10 to 15 percent of the trailer's total weight. On a fully loaded Westbrook 305DBLC, that works out to roughly 990 to 1,490 pounds pressing on the rear axle and coming out of the truck's payload alongside every passenger and everything in the bed. Find the payload on the Tire and Loading Information sticker in the driver's door jamb. Read it before falling in love with a floorplan.
Cargo capacity is the gap between empty and GVWR: 1,662 pounds on the 245RKLC, 2,000 on the 285BHLC and 1,917 on the 305DBLC. A full fresh tank uses 350 of that on its own.
Length carries a cost too. Hitch a 37'9" trailer to a heavy-duty pickup and the whole rig stretches well past 50 feet, which is more than some older state park and national forest sites can take. Check site length when you book.
None of this rules out the bigger models. It means the right Westbrook Luxury gets chosen at the truck as much as on the lot, so be aware of your tow vehicle's tow capacity before you visit.
Who the Westbrook Luxury Isn't For
We'd rather lose a sale than put someone in the wrong trailer.
Everyone else, especially first-time buyers planning most of their nights at campgrounds with hookups, is exactly who this trailer was built around.
The Short Version
- Compare the everyday features, not the showpieces. Ducted air, the tankless heater, power jacks and storage are where the Luxury trim earns its price.
- Ask about the battery before any no-hookup trip. Expect one 12-volt battery of around 100 amp-hours and no inverter, and find out whether it's lithium or lead-acid.
- Plan around 42 gallons of fresh water. Every model has the same tank.
- Shop by GVWR and loaded hitch weight. Check both against your truck's door-jamb sticker rather than the brochure's empty weight.
- Southeast summers call for a second look at the optional bedroom A/C, especially on the 305DBLC.
The best sign you chose well is a first night when nobody is awake at 2 a.m. thinking about the trailer.
…and with that, we'll see you down the road.
