Fredericksburg, Virginia is a very historic place. There were settlements throughout the area in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. In 1671, a patent was granted for one 50-acre tract near the Rappahannock river to Thomas Royston and John Buckner from Sir William Berkeley.
During the Civil War, the largest battle in America (at the time) was in Fredericksburg. The entire Battle of Fredericksburg resulted in significant casualties for both sides. After the Civil War, the city had a struggling economy with slow growth. It was after the arrival of the railroad in 1872, that industrial activities began to transform the city. The Fredericksburg, Virginia area is home to two Civil War battlefields, Fredericksburg Battlefield and Chancellorsville Battlefield. These spots are great for history buffs who want to learn more about the battles fought on these grounds.
The Fredericksburg Battlefield offers an orientation film, tours and exhibits as well as the opportunity to walk the historic Sunken Road.

For campers who love to walk, run or bike, the Rappahannock River Heritage Trail is a great place to visit. The trail is a peaceful paved path offering beautiful views of the Rappahannock River. It is a 1.6 mile path that connects two parts of the Canal Path. This creates a 3.1 mile loop which is great for those who enjoy long walks. The trail is open all day, year round so no matter when you visit, it is always a great place to get outside and enjoy the outdoors.

The Fredericksburg Trolley Tour is the perfect thing to do on a first visit or for families. It is a 75 minute tour through the downtown Historic District pointing out the best places to shop, eat and explore in the city. The guided trolley tour discusses the many monuments and attractions that Fredericksburg has to offer.

The Washington Heritage Museums include the St. James House, Mary Washington House, Hugh Mercer Apothecary Shop and Rising Sun Tavern. These museums are an affordable thing to do as adult tickets range from five to seven dollars.
These four properties are from the 18th century and are used as education resources for those who are interested in the historic background of the buildings.
The St. James House is only open for tours during select weeks in the spring and fall while the other three locations are open for guided tours all year.
