Things to do in the Atlanta-area for Rvers

Looking for a vacation that has the perfect mix of outdoor activities and exciting city life? Atlanta is a great stop on your next road trip because it has all kinds of activities to keep campers of all kinds entertained. 

Atlanta offers a bustling city life with tons to do for families, couples and solo travelers while the surrounding area has hiking, rivers and more.

History of Atlanta

Atlanta, Georgia was founded in 1837 and was named after the Western & Atlantic railroad line. The city opened its first manufacturing establishment in 1844 and just 16 years later, Atlanta had several different types of factories such as clothes, soap, shoes and more. Later on, Atlanta was promoted as the “new South” which included a more diverse economy.

Stone Mountain Park

Stone Mountain Park, located just 30 minutes outside of Atlanta, is a family friendly attraction center. There is so much to do for campers of all ages. There are plenty of fun things for kids such as the Great Locomotive Chase Adventure Golf, Dinotorium and Dinosaur Explore experience. 

There are many different seasonal events and festivals to participate in as well as hiking and different historical centers. It is packed with lots of options for dining and shopping. Stone Mountain Park has a great variety of activities so you are never bored.

Six Flags Over Georgia

For thrill seekers, Six Flags Over Georgia is an exciting amusement park to visit near the Atlanta area. It has water rides, thrill rides, family rides, kid rides and so much more.

Not only does it offer tons of attractions, it also has fun events going on all year long. There are special events for holidays as well as traditions at the park. Brew and Bites Festival is an annual event showcasing the best brews and bites in Atlanta.

Chattahoochee River

The Chattahoochee is a 48 mile long river run through the Atlanta area. It is the perfect place to stop by on a hot, summer day to cool down. Campers can float along the river and relax or even kayak, canoe or fish as well. 

There are also 7.11 miles of open trails for walking and cycling along the river. All park roads are open to cyclists as well.

Georgia Aquarium

Explore under the sea creatures at the Georgia Aquarium. This unique aquarium is huge and gives visitors the opportunity to see ocean life up close. It also offers interactive and hands-on experiences and encounters like the Shark Cage Dive or a Penguin encounter, allowing you to meet a penguin and learn more about their habitats and the aquarium's preservation efforts.

The Georgia Aquarium has over 150 different species. From a big-bellied seahorse to a tiger shark, there are all kinds of fish to learn more about.

Sweetwater Creek State Park

Sweetwater Creek State Park is a popular place to visit for campers. It is 2,549 acres with a 215 acre lake, fishing docs, boat ramp, playgrounds, outdoor fitness equipment and more. In the warmer months, rentals for canoes, kayaks, fishing boats, stand-up paddle boards and pedal boats are available for rent.

There are 15 miles of wooded hiking trails and guided tours are available all year around from park rangers. Sweetwater Creek State Park is a beautiful place to explore.

Atlanta History Center

The Atlanta History Center is a large space packed with exhibits, historic houses and gardens to explore. It's a great educational stop to make on your trip to learn more about the history of Atlanta, while also exploring gorgeous gardens and trails.

There is a lot to do, so the website helps make planning your trip easier with their planner tool. Choose the topics you are interested in learning about, group size and time limit, and it will show you the places the recommended you check out during your visit.

Ghost Hill Campground

Ghost Hill Campground is 17 miles outside of Atlanta and just one mile from Stone Mountain Memorial Park. RV sites offer full hook up including water, sewer and power connections. There is WiFi, laundry facilities and a bath house available for campers as well.

This campground is surrounded by a lot of different activities and events to participate in such as live music in the park, free coffee samples and more.

Stone Mountain Park Campground 

Stone Mountain Park Campground is a great choice to stay because of how close it is to Great Stone Mountain Park attractions such as the Summit Skyride, ropes course and more. 

The campgrounds have several amenities onsite that are available to campers as well. There is a pool, sand volleyball court, horseshoe court as well as grills, picnic tables, laundry facilities, dump station and more.

Atlanta South RV Resort

This campground is an affordable place to stay with a nightly rate of $50. It is located near lots of Atlanta attractions from museums, botanical gardens, amusement parks and historical sites. 

Atlanta South RV Resort has 140 RV sites with water, sewer, electric and a fire pit. There are 80 pull through sites offering larger RVs an easy way to park and set up camp. Other amenities included are the restrooms and bath house, laundry site, playground and a seasonal pool.
