Advice you should avoid on your next camping trip.
This blog post is dedicated to the worst advice we’ve ever heard about RVing. Flip this bad advice upside down to make your next RV adventure a huge success!1. An RV trip doesn’t require a lot of preparation.
A successful RV adventure always involves loads of preparation! Your trip will become a living nightmare if you don’t plan accordingly. Planning your RV trip should begin months or even a year before you visit a destination. There are a number of essentials that are necessary to make your next RV trip smooth sailing, including:
√ A reservation at a state park (Popular state parks are booked up to a year in advance.)
√ Travel budget
√ Food supply
√ A planned out travel route
√ Places you want to stop to sightsee and rest for the night
2. RV-specific route planners for your GPS device are a waste of money.
A regular GPS will not suffice on your RV trip! Your RV is much larger and heavier than the car sitting in your garage. The GPS designed for your car will not take your RV’s dimensions into consideration when calculating the route to your destination. Don’t get yourself into that awful situation where you drive up to an overpass and have to contemplate whether your RV will fit under it!
3. Pack more than you think you’ll need.
Packing too much stuff will add weight to your load and driving a heavier camping rig will decrease your gas mileage, leading to a more costly trip. In addition, you will be at a disadvantage when braking and accelerating compared to the cars around you, making your trip especially accident-prone. A simple way to shed some cargo pounds is to substitute your glass products with plastic products. In addition, you could take items out of their bulky packaging and store them in zip-lock bags. Ultimately, only bring what you know you will need. Remember, more food can be purchased on the road!
4. There’s no use in documenting your trip.
A great way to relive the memories of your RV adventure is to document your trip! Take photos, write it all down in a journal, or make a scrapbook for each RV trip. Today, we have technology that makes it easy to document our lives and preserve memories so you can capture all those wonderful memories! Documenting your RV trip is great idea for families because it’s an excellent way for the kids to be creative and express themselves. There’s nothing more rewarding than looking back with your family at the hilarious and frustrating moments that you all forgot about!
5. Its ok to rest for the night in any random parking lot.
Even though your RV is self-contained, you can’t expect to pull into any parking lot to rest for the night! Make sure to check the entire parking lot for “No parking” signs. However, sometimes you could be kicked out of a parking lot that didn’t have a sign. To avoid this, there are many popular free RV overnight parking lots across the US. Most Walmart’s have welcomed RV’s to park overnight. Kmart also has a policy of allowing RV’s to park in their lots overnight. Ultimately, choose your parking lot wisely for a good nights rest!
