Pop-Up or Travel Trailer: Which Entry-Level RV is Right For You?

Written by Derek Cunningham | February 27, 2018

When families are shopping for their first RV, they often gravitate towards entry-level models below $25,000 MSRP. These smaller RVs are a perfect starting point for the RV lifestyle, especially for couples with smaller children.

The two main options at this price point are pop-up/folding tent campers and lightweight travel trailers. They each compliment different styles of camping, so we are outlining their pluses and minuses to help you find the one that best suits your needs.

Pop-ups

  • Most affordable RV
  • Collapsible walls make it easy to store and transport
  • Can be towed by smaller vehicles
  • Easy to maintain

Pop-up/folding tent campers are great for outdoor lovers who are looking for a comfortable place to sleep. Because of their compact design, they are easy to bring on adventures and store at home. They are best for families with smaller children who plan to spend most of their camping time outdoors.

However, pop-ups are smaller than travel trailers, and they can lack amenities like ovens, fridges and closed bathrooms.  Their canvas walls do not provide as much protection from the weather, so cold nights can be a challenge (although hard side pop-ups can solve this problem).

Brands to consider:

Travel trailers

  • Solid walls provide more resistance to weather
  • More living space
  • More amenities included
  • Bathroom privacy

Travel trailers are ideal for families that need more indoor space for eating, sleeping and lounging. They usually feature queen beds; dinette tables; kitchens with stoves and fridges; and bathrooms with a closable door for privacy.

Their hard walls offer more shelter from inclement weather, but they are larger, heavier and more expensive. They require a larger tow vehicle, and they will likely need to be stored in a driveway or yard.
