Motorhome Safety

Written by Derek Cunningham | September 30, 2014

We hope you had a great weekend camping! While RVing can be a great way to spend time with your family and travel the country you also have to remember that RV's are large vehicles traveling down the road. In this blog post we are outlining our top four motorhome safety tips so that you can reach your destination safely.

1.) Check your tires: One of the most crucial parts of motorhome safety is to make sure your tires are properly inflated and in good condition. A tire blowout in a motorhome while traveling down the road can be extremely serious. Check your tires for rot and make sure they have the correct tire pressure.

2.) Wear a seat belt: I know this sounds like a no brainer but the number one safety feature in your motorhome is a seat belt. We know with all the conveniences and luxury motorhomes have its easy to forget that you are in a moving vehicle, however when in motion it is imperative that everyone is seated and wearing a seat belt. That's why motorhome manufacturers equip the unit with a seat belt for every seat.

3.) Gain Experience: While most states do not require a special license to drive a motorhome that doesn't mean they are easy to maneuver. Motorhomes with their increased length and weight drive completely different than a normal vehicle and gaining experience in driving a motorhome before your trip is a great way to keep your family safe. Before your maiden voyage in your motorhome take short drives so you can get use to the increased turning radius, stopping distance, blind spots, tail swing, backing up, mirrors/camera's and passing distance that you will encounter while traveling. These short practice drives allow you to get use to your motorhome without distractions and extra cargo.

4.) Drive Defensively: Motorhomes do not react like conventional vehicles meaning they cannot stop short, accelerate quickly or turn swiftly. Defensive driving is a must when operating a motorhome, make sure to leave more room between you and the car in front of you than you normally would when driving a normal car. Also keep your eyes peeled for distracted or reckless drivers.

If you follow these four simple motorhome safety tips you have a more enjoyable and safer trip with your family. Should you be looking for way to save gas while on your next trip check out this post. Should you still be in search of an RV check out our New RV's FAQ E-book!
