Midwest RV Adventure: A Thousand Trails Road Trip Through 6 States

If you’ve been itching to explore the Midwest, we’ve got a road trip for you. This loop takes you through Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, and Ohio, with stops at seven Thousand Trails campgrounds, each offering its own local flavor, scenery, and opportunities to relax (or adventure). It’s the kind of trip that gives you a little bit of everything: small-town charm, lakeside views, peaceful woods, and even a bit of cave exploration. Let’s hit the road!

pine country campground

Stop 1: Pine Country – Belvidere, IL

Start your journey in northern Illinois at Pine Country, just outside Rockford. It’s a quiet, friendly campground with shaded sites and open skies—perfect for easing into road trip mode. You’re not far from small-town diners, antique shops, and a handful of local parks if you want to stretch your legs.

Stop 2: Indian Lakes – Batesville, IN

Next, head southeast into Indiana and roll into Indian Lakes. This spot sits on 150 acres with a handful of lakes right on the property, so bring your fishing gear or rent a paddleboat. There’s mini golf, walking trails, and tons of green space. It’s a great place to slow down for a day or two.

Stop 3: Horseshoe Lakes – Clinton, IN

Still in Indiana, your next campground is Horseshoe Lakes in Clinton. This one’s tucked into a dense forest and surrounded by a collection of horseshoe-shaped lakes. It feels remote in the best way, with peaceful sites and great wildlife watching.

Stop 4: Diamond Caverns RV & Golf Resort – Park City, KY

Cross the border into Kentucky and get ready for a change of scenery. Diamond Caverns is right next to Mammoth Cave National Park, so you’ve got hiking, cave tours, and golf all in one place. It's a unique mix of adventure and comfort, with full hookups and a well-kept campground.

Stop 5: Bear Cave – Buchanan, MI

Now it’s time to head north into Michigan and settle in at Bear Cave, the only naturally formed cave in the state open to the public. The campground sits along the St. Joseph River, making it perfect for kayaking or just relaxing by the water. Don’t skip the cave tour - it’s well worth the stop!

Stop 6: St. Clair – Saint Clair, MI

Stay in Michigan and cruise east to St. Clair, located near the shore of the St. Clair River. The scene here is more nautical, with easy access to the riverwalk, cute shops, and small-town eats. The campground itself is calm and tidy, with plenty of shade and room to breathe.

Stop 7: Wilmington – Wilmington, OH

Heading into Ohio, Wilmington is a spacious campground with open fields and lots of room to roam. It’s close to Caesar Creek State Park and has a laid-back, family-friendly feel. You’ll find fishing ponds, a pool, and regular events if you’re feeling social.

Final Stop: Kenisee Lake – Jefferson, OH

End your road trip at Kenisee Lake, tucked into Ohio’s wine country. The campground has three lakes, quiet wooded sites, and a really peaceful energy. It’s the perfect wind-down before heading home… or planning your next trip.

Trip Notes:

  • You can take this route in either direction, depending on where you're starting.

  • It’s about 1,200 miles total if you loop through all seven stops.

  • Your Thousand Trails membership should cover all these campgrounds if you have access to the Midwest section, so you’re saving big on lodging as you go!

Grab a map, pack some snacks, and get ready to see just how much the Midwest has to offer. See you out there!
