Jacksonville is where I first fell in love with running. It’s not the Rockies or the Pacific Northwest, but there’s something special about the diversity of the forests, swamps, and coastal trails here. The mix of towering pines, palmetto-lined paths, and hidden waterways makes every run an adventure. Growing up, I ran through places like Hanna Park, Julington-Durbin Preserve, and Graham Swamp, long before I started traveling the country in my RV, chasing endurance records.
But nothing beats the unpredictability of running in Florida, and I’ve got the stories to prove it.
The Time I (Almost) Hallucinated a Panther
Last year, I was the fastest person to ever run the entire length of Florida. 1,111 miles in 21 days. That’s two marathons a day, every day, for three weeks. It started in the Everglades, where I figured my biggest threat would be alligators or snakes. Instead, the real danger turned out to be something I never saw coming.
Ultrarunning means pushing through exhaustion, and when you don’t sleep much, your brain starts playing tricks on you. Over the years, I’ve hallucinated dancing monkeys in New York, rhinos in Colorado, and vending machines in the middle of the desert. So, on day three of my Florida run, when a full-grown panther leapt out of the bushes and ran alongside me, I immediately assumed I was just seeing things.
Then I looked over at my dad, who was running a few steps behind me. He had the same wide-eyed look on his face.
“Do you see that panther?” I asked.
“Oh my god,” he said. “I thought I was hallucinating too!”
That’s when it hit us... the panther was real. We panicked, startled it off, and then immediately burst out laughing. Of all the things we thought we might encounter in the Florida wilderness, a panther running beside us was definitely not on the list!

Jacksonville might be known for its beaches and vibrant city life, but it’s also home to some incredible trails for both hiking and running. If you’re looking for variety, Hanna Park is a must-visit. The park has miles of shaded trails that weave through forests, around freshwater lakes, and lead right to the beach. It’s a great spot for both trail running and casual hikes. After exploring, you can cool off in the ocean or kick back at one of the park’s campgrounds—perfect for RV travelers looking to stay close to the action.
Julington-Durbin Preserve
Julington-Durbin Preserve offers a more relaxed trail experience with flat, sandy paths through pine forests and along the creek. It’s great for a nature walk or a mellow trail run. There aren’t any campgrounds nearby, but it’s worth a stop if you’re passing through town and want to stretch your legs.
Gourd Island
Gourd Island is a hidden gem with quiet trails surrounded by natural beauty. It’s perfect for a peaceful hike or an easy run, and the laid-back vibe makes it a great spot to connect with nature. Like Julington-Durbin, there aren’t any campgrounds nearby, but it’s an awesome quick stop for anyone cruising through Jacksonville.
Guana Preserve
A bit south of Jacksonville, Guana Preserve offers a mix of trails through forests, marshes, and along the shoreline. It’s ideal for hiking, running, or even a bit of birdwatching. North Beach Camp Resort is a great nearby option for those traveling in an RV, providing easy access to both the trails and the beach.
Graham Swamp
If you’re craving a more rugged adventure, Graham Swamp delivers. The trails here are more technical, with plenty of roots and elevation changes to keep things interesting. Whether you’re hiking or trail running, you’ll enjoy the challenge. Beverly Beach Camptown RV Resort is a solid nearby option, offering beautiful ocean views and a convenient home base for exploring the area.
