There is nothing quite like cooking over an open flame. Whether it's sizzling bacon in a cast iron skillet or roasting marshmallows for s'mores, campfire cooking brings flavor, warmth, and connection to your RV adventures. The smell of wood smoke drifting through your campsite is a sensory experience you just cannot get from an indoor kitchen.

### **Essential Gear for Open Fire Cooking**

Before you start, make sure you have the right tools for the job.

Must-have items include:

- Cast iron skillet or Dutch oven for even heat and durability
- Campfire grill grate to keep pots and pans steady over the flames
- Heat-resistant gloves to protect hands when handling hot cookware
- Long-handled utensils to keep you a safe distance from the fire
- Fire starters and dry wood to ensure you can get cooking quickly

### **Campfire Cooking Safety Tips**

Open fire cooking is fun, but safety comes first, especially around your RV.

1. Set up away from your RV and flammable materials to prevent accidental fires.
2. Check local fire regulations before building a fire. Some campgrounds have restrictions.
3. Never leave your fire unattended and fully extinguish it before going to bed.
4. Use a fire ring or designated pit to keep flames contained.

### **Easy & Delicious Open Fire Recipes**

**1. Foil Packet Breakfast**

- Layer diced potatoes, onions, peppers, eggs, and cheese in foil.
- Wrap tightly and place on hot coals for 15 to 20 minutes.

**2. Campfire Chili**

- Brown ground beef in a Dutch oven over the fire.
- Add canned beans, tomatoes, chili powder, and simmer for 30 to 40 minutes.

**3. Grilled Skewers**

- Thread chicken, veggies, and pineapple onto skewers.
- Grill over medium flames until cooked through, turning often.

**4. Classic S'mores**

- Roast marshmallows over the fire, sandwich with chocolate and graham crackers, and enjoy.

### **Pro Tips for Better Flavor**

- Use hardwoods like oak or hickory for a smokier taste.
- Cook over hot coals instead of direct flames for more even heat.
- Season cast iron cookware regularly to maintain a natural non-stick surface.

### **Making Memories Around the Fire**

RV camping is about more than just the miles you travel - it's about the moments you create. Cooking over an open fire turns a simple meal into an experience. With the right gear, safety measures, and a few easy recipes, you can turn your next RV trip into a culinary adventure under the stars.
